Bahrain’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Fawzia Zainal, headed the Kingdom’s delegation at the 118th ordinary session of the Arab League Economic and Social Council at ministerial level, held at the Arab League General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo.

The meeting reviewed several items on the council’s agenda, including follow-up on the implementation of decisions adopted during its 117th session and the activities of the General Secretariat between the two sessions.

The council also discussed preparations for the economic and social dossier to be submitted to the upcoming 35th ordinary session of the Arab League Summit, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia.

Economic and development issues discussed included developments in completing the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, progress towards the Arab Customs Union, investment developments in Arab countries, economic and development diversification, and the development of public finances.

The meeting also addressed efforts to strengthen Arab-international cooperation and support sustainable development, including Arab initiatives related to sustainable and green financing policies and digital transformation, as part of efforts to advance joint Arab economic and development cooperation.

The council further discussed measures to support the Palestinian economy and the unified Arab statement for the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, along with periodic reports from specialised Arab organisations.

On social affairs, the meeting considered initiatives to develop the Arab Guiding Framework for Skills and promote the economic empowerment of beneficiaries of social protection programmes.

The council also reviewed reports and decisions issued by Arab ministerial councils and specialised committees, including the Council of Arab Health Ministers and the Arab Women Committee.

Bahrain’s delegation also included Minister Plenipotentiary at the Kingdom’s Permanent Mission to the Arab League Abdulrahman Hassan Hashem, and Head of the Arab and Islamic Countries Relations Section at the Ministry of Finance and National Economy Abdullah Abdulhamid Al Aradi.
