Lobaina Edges Into Boxing Quarters
Jorge Lobaina kept Bahrain’s boxing campaign alive at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya yesterday, edging Kyrgyzstan’s Bakyt Toktosun Uulu on points to reach the men’s 90kg quarter-finals.
The 90kg contender prevailed 3-2 after three rounds in a closely contested bout at Nishio Gymnasium, with three of the five judges awarding him the fight.
Two scored it 29-28 in Lobaina’s favour, while another had him winning 30-27. Toktosun Uulu took the remaining cards 30-27 and 29-28.
Medal Within Reach
Lobaina will return to the ring on Monday for the last eight, where another victory would guarantee him at least a bronze medal.
The semi-finals follow on Wednesday, before the final takes place on Friday.
The Bahraini is the last of the five-member squad still standing under Irish coach John Conlan, following the earlier eliminations of Maryam Khamis, Ali Abdalla, Omar Budhahei and Hamsa Vogel.
