TikTok to Pay Alabama at Least $100 Million in Settlement

Montgomery: TikTok agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million to settle a lawsuit alleging injury to young users, just days before the case was slated to go to trial. The deal also mandates TikTok to implement tighter safety measures for teens in the state.

According to the agreement, teen users will have a two-hour daily usage limit, overnight access limitations from midnight to 6 a.m., better age verification, and more powerful parental controls. TikTok will also offer a non-personalized stream and limit cosmetic filters for teens.

Alabama may receive up to $300 million if other conditions are met. The case, filed in 2025, claimed that TikTok's platform was built in ways that could foster addictive behaviour and harm young people's well-being, claims TikTok denies.

The settlement also requires TikTok to make alterations to its platform, such as improved protections for children and more transparency about how its recommendation systems work. Alabama officials stated that the agreement is meant to address concerns about the platform's influence on children and teenagers, while TikTok has denied wrongdoing.
