Keep Kids Safe From Cybercrime

Bahrain’s security awareness guidance has warned that children can face exploitation, blackmail and other forms of cybercrime while using online games, social media and internet websites.

Criminals may use different methods to threaten or pressure children into paying money, revealing sensitive information or carrying out actions that could seriously harm them and their families.

Parents are urged to closely monitor their children’s online activities, educate them about cyber risks and discourage interaction with strangers on social media platforms. They are also advised to check applications before installing them on children’s devices and choose age-appropriate and beneficial apps.

The guidance also recommends using parental monitoring applications to help parents understand how children use their smart devices and watching for sudden changes in their behaviour or thinking that could indicate a problem.

Parents and children are encouraged to seek help from a trusted adult if they encounter online abuse or threats. Any suspected cybercrime involving a child should be reported to the relevant authorities so that legal measures can be taken to protect the child’s rights.

Authorities also stressed the importance of continuous awareness, urging parents to regularly discuss the safe use of social media, applications and online games with their children and stay informed about emerging digital platforms and risks.
