Peace Must Be Built

Bahrain reaffirms its commitment to international law, freedom of navigation and lasting peace.

Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani delivered Bahrain’s address during the General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, calling for stronger implementation of international law and greater protection of people’s rights and livelihoods.

Dr. Al Zayani reaffirmed Bahrain’s commitment to international covenants, freedom of navigation and a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace, in line with the approach of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

Addressing the Strait of Hormuz, Dr. Al Zayani stressed that freedom of transit is protected under international law and rejected attempts to impose restrictions, permits or fees on passage.

He said Bahrain led efforts resulting in UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and submitted a draft resolution on protecting commercial navigation.

“A resolution adopted but not implemented has no value, and a right that is recognised but not protected has no meaning,” Dr. Al Zayani said.

He also reaffirmed Bahrain’s positions on Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Yemen, while calling for adherence to the UN Charter, respect for sovereignty and peaceful settlement of disputes.

The minister said Bahrain would continue supporting a rules-based international order, stressing that security and prosperity are closely interconnected.
