Saudi Arabia Intercepts Houthi Drones Headed for Riyadh

Riyadh: The Saudi-led coalition said early Saturday that its air defences intercepted and destroyed two drones launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement toward Riyadh, according to reporters.

The coalition said it was continuing to monitor missile and drone threats targeting Saudi Arabia. The coalition also reported intercepting two ballistic missiles heading toward Khamis Mushait, a city in southwestern Saudi Arabia. Saudi Civil Defence issued alerts overnight for Khamis Mushait and nearby Abha, although no alert was reported for Riyadh.  

The Houthis, who control large parts of northern Yemen, have stepped up attacks against Saudi Arabia in recent months. Their attacks have involved drones and missiles targeting Saudi territory, as well as strikes affecting Red Sea shipping.

The latest interceptions came only hours after the Saudi, Pakistani, and Turkish military chiefs met in Riyadh to discuss threats to the country. Last month, the three countries signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, which committed them to tighter military cooperation and collective defence.

The ongoing strikes are escalating regional tensions, with Saudi cities, oil infrastructure, and shipping routes under heightened security threat. The coalition has not disclosed additional information about the most recent drone launches, and no injuries or damage have been recorded as a result of the interceptions.
