US, China to set up AI incident communication channel

Washington: Following negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two countries have agreed to set up a bilateral communication channel for AI-related events. The technique is designed to facilitate communication when sophisticated AI systems pose major safety or national-security risks.

The two countries will also convene a US-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialog to address the risks and benefits of advanced AI. The next round of talks is anticipated to take place in November 2026, with officials concentrating on common dangers and methods to increase openness.

The pact comes as Washington and Beijing battle for sophisticated AI technologies, while also raising concerns about AI safety, cyber risks and mishaps involving increasingly autonomous systems. Earlier discussions suggested a ‘incident line’ for quickly communicating major AI-related threats.

The channel is expected to assist the two governments in promptly sharing information and reducing the possibility of misunderstandings or escalation if an AI system causes a significant incident. The move comes as Washington and Beijing strive for advanced AI leadership while grappling with common worries about cybersecurity, autonomous systems, and national security risks.
