Police sword-attacker gets three-year jail term

TDT | Manama

A Bahraini man, who assaulted a policeman using a sword while resisting arrest, was sentenced by the First Criminal Court this week to three years behind bars. The details of the case show that the defendant, who is in his 20s, was wanted for his involvement in a couple of security cases. Police received a tip that he was hiding in an apartment in East Eker village in the Capital Governorate.

On January 9 earlier this year, a police force raided the flat, where they faced strong resistance from the defendant, who used a sword to attack them. One of the policemen sustained several injuries as a result of the attack. However, the man was controlled, handcuffed, and taken into custody.

The man was later referred to the Public Prosecution, where he was interrogated and accused of assaulting an on-duty policeman and causing the injuries mentioned in the medical report, as well as possessing a weapon, the sword, without permission from authorities in the Interior Ministry.
