Ruling against man who locked up mother upheld

ManamaA Bahraini man who locked up his mother for not giving him money has had his conviction upheld by the Supreme Appeals Court.

He was handed down five years in prison, which was confirmed by judges at the Supreme Appeals Court.

The defendant is said to have dragged his mother into their house and locked her up for almost five hours because she refused to give him money. The woman, in her sixties, eventually jumped out of the house and had her legs broken, according to court files.

The woman, who reached the police station on a wheelchair, said that she also underwent a surgery on her left leg.

According to court files, the incident occurred when the woman was sitting alone in the backyard of her house.

“Nobody stays with me and at around 10:30 pm, my son suddenly came in and started swearing at me,” she said

When asked, why he was shouting at me, he told me that he wants money, which I denied as “I didn’t have any money left.”

“He then dragged me by my Hijab after covering my mouth with it and then locked me up in the kitchen from 10:30 pm until 3:30 am.

“I sneaked to the rooftop when he slept and jumped out, “fracturing my leg,” she said adding: “I then crawled to a neighbour’s house.”

“My other son took to a hospital from there and got my leg operated,” she said, according to court files.

The woman told prosecutors that her son also threatened to frame up her other son, if she did not give him money.

The defendant was already facing 28 different complaints against him.
