Bahrain is reintroducing the mukhtar system in an updated form as part of efforts to strengthen communication with residents and improve coordination in addressing community needs.

The development was discussed during a meeting held by Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa with the governors of the Kingdom's governorates, attended by the Deputy Interior Minister, the Chief of Public Security and the General Coordinator of the Governorates.

The minister highlighted the updated system's role in identifying citizens' needs and social issues and ensuring greater coordination between governorates and the relevant authorities.

Under the new framework, mukhtars will work under the supervision of governors and in coordination with the concerned authorities. Their responsibilities include strengthening social cohesion, identifying social needs and problems, supporting crime prevention efforts and promoting communication with different sections and institutions of society.

General Shaikh Rashid stressed that governorates have an important role in building a safe society based on national awareness and a strong security culture.

He described positive engagement with residents and community councils as a national and cultural legacy that should be maintained and further developed.

The Interior Minister also praised the governorates for strengthening cooperation with various government authorities, expanding community partnerships and ensuring efficient delivery of services.
