Large turnout at traditional “Haya Biya” celebrations in Qalali

Muharraq Governorate hosted its annual folk heritage festival “Haya Biya” on the Al Shurooq Coast at Sama Bay Park in Qalali, drawing large crowds of families, residents and visitors in a vibrant celebration of Bahrain’s traditional culture.

The event, organised by the Muharraq Governorate, was attended by Governor Salman bin Isa bin Hindi Al Mannaei, who highlighted the importance of preserving Bahraini heritage and strengthening its presence among younger generations.

In remarks marking the occasion, the governor extended congratulations to King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and to the people of Bahrain on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, describing the festival as a reflection of the kingdom’s cultural identity and unity.

The celebrations featured a range of traditional activities designed to recreate aspects of old Bahraini life. Children were given “Haya Biya” plants, while folk songs, chants, and traditional foods formed part of the programme. One of the central highlights saw children taking part in the symbolic throwing of “Al-Haya Biya” into the sea, amid a festive coastal atmosphere.

Organisers said the event was aimed at keeping local traditions alive and ensuring they remain embedded in the memory of future generations, particularly through community participation and family-friendly activities.

At the conclusion of the festival, the governor thanked all supporting entities for their contribution to the event’s success, including the Ministry of Interior, Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, Seef Properties, KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre, Muharraq Municipality, Keshat Tours, Inter Gulf Insurance Brokers, Muharraq Municipal Council, and the Friends of Gardens Nursery.
