The Law on Restorative Justice for Children, which takes effect today, will consolidate Bahrain’s status in protecting child rights.

This was emphasised by Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan as h paid inspection visits yesterday to the Child Welfare Home in the Seef District and the Child Protection Centre in Gudaibiya.

Minister Humaidan, also Chairman of the National Childhood Committee, said that the Child Shelter Home is an initiative launched within the framework of cooperation and integration with other government departments, such as the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry, the Interior Ministry and the Public Prosecution.

It is in line with the provisions of Law 4/2021 on the promulgation of the Corrective Justice Law for Children and their Protection from Ill-Treatment, especially Article (22) of its executive regulation.

Minister Humaidan asserted that the implementation of Law 4/2021 will strengthen Bahrain’s regional and international standing in the field of human rights protection, in line with the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the constant follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to ensure that it is applied on the ground, achieve children’s interests and guarantee their right to live in peace.

The Kingdom is among leading countries in legalising child rights through the issuance of many decree-laws, and accession to the relevant international treaties, foremost of which is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Bahrain ratified in 1992.

It has also signed cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding with child-related international organisations and their affiliate committees.

The Minister checked on the final preparations for the beginning of the work of the Child Shelter Home, a facility that offers shelter for children who are subjected to ill-treatment, to ensure that the best services are provided there.

The facility will be transferred to the Social Care Complex in Hamad Town upon completion of its construction.
