Insulting glorified personality: man loses final appeal

TDT | Manama

The Court of Cassation yesterday upheld the punishment of a Bahraini man who was previously convicted for insulting a person glorified by a sect. This was the final chance for the convict to appeal against his one-year imprisonment, which was issued against him last year by the Minor Criminal Court.

His trial followed an interrogation launched by the Public Prosecution, accusing him of insulting a person who is glorified by a sect during religious sermons on May 24 and 25 of last year. The man initially appealed against the verdict before the Supreme Court of Appeal, which reviewed his request and upheld the sentence.

During the review of his second appeal before the Court of Cassation, the man’s defence attorney pleaded that his client is not guilty, stating that he, the appellant, narrated historical events and the crime is not complete. However, the court studied the provided evidence and the previously issued verdict, and decided to reject the man’s appeal, abolishing his last opportunity to evade imprisonment.
