Carrefour signs agreement to help reduce food waste

Carrefour, which is operated in Bahrain by Majid Al Futtaim, signed an agreement with The Conserving Bounties Society, to establish the first specialised foodbank in the Kingdom, to raise awareness on food safety and support the cause of reducing food waste in the country, while at the same time helping those who need it most. Carrefour will provide left over food items to the foodbank, which will then be delivered and redistributed to families and individuals in need.

This initiative will help reduce the amount of food wastage, while raising awareness on the importance of food security, and contributing to a positive impact on both the environment and the welfare of society. “We are looking forward to working together with Majid Al Futtaim and hope to establish a strong, strategic partnership that will raise awareness on rationalising food consumption and the disadvantages of food waste, which we aim to gradually reduce with this initiative,” said Shaikh Zeyad Al Khalifa, Vice-Chairman of the Conserving Bounties Society.

Jerome Akel, Country Manager of Carrefour Bahrain at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, said, “I am pleased that Carrefour is involved in such a great initiative, as it demonstrates our continuous commitment to the environment and the welfare of our community, one of many core values we believe in at Majid Al Futtaim. “The Conserving Bounties Society has a very diligent process in collecting perishable freshfood products everyday, while adhering to the highest hygiene and safety standards.

“As a leading retailer and a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to reducing food waste in the country and this way supporting society and create great moments for everyone everyday.” Following the signing ceremony, Shaikh Zeyad Al Khalifa presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Carrefour Bahrain to demonstrate their support for this initiative. The project will be rolled out in all Carrefour hypermarkets, with the Conserving Bounties Society starting to collect various food items and fresh produce.
