Trump-Xi summit begins as US-China trade truce extended

Washington: US President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington, where he began a three-day state visit aimed at reducing tensions between the world's two biggest economies. On Wednesday evening, Trump personally received Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, an uncommon occurrence for a visiting foreign leader.

The visit comes as Washington and Beijing have agreed to extend their current trade truce by two months. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the deal, which was set to expire on November 10, will now be extended until January 10, 2027, providing both sides more time to reach a broader economic agreement.

Trump and Xi are likely to talk about tariffs, agricultural purchases, rare-earth supply, artificial intelligence, and other trade concerns at their summit. The meetings are also expected to include discussions about Taiwan and broader geopolitical problems.

The extension comes after recent conversations between US Treasury officials and Chinese Vise Premier He Lifeng, with both countries aiming to maintain economic stability while unresolved trade and technological conflicts persist.
