Boxing pair exit games

Bahrain's Omar Budhahei and Hamsa Vogel bowed out of the boxing competition at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya yesterday following defeats at Nishio Gymnasium.

The pair, part of Bahrain's five-member squad coached by Irishman John Conlan, saw their campaigns ended on points.

Budhahei's run came to a close in the men's 60kg round of 32 after a unanimous defeat to Iraq's Mohammed Sattar Salih Shijlawi.

All five judges awarded the bout to the Iraqi, who prevailed 5-0 after three rounds. The scorecards read 30-26, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

Vogel later faced India's Ankush in the men's 80kg round of 16, with the Bahraini also going down 5-0 on points.

Ankush swept all three rounds on each of the five judges' cards, which all finished 30-27, bringing Vogel's campaign to a close.

Attention now turns to Ali Abdalla, the only Bahrain men's boxer in action today.

Abdalla advanced to the men's 70kg round of 16 after opening his campaign with a 4-1 points victory over Turkmenistan's Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov.

He will next trade jabs with Tajikistan's Shamsher Saidov, who received a bye through the preliminary phase. Their bout is scheduled for 1.15pm, Bahrain time.
