Rare tumour removed at SMC

Manama : Doctors at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) has succeeded in conducting a difficult surgery to remove a rare tumour from the eye.
The Bahraini medical team from the Department of Ophthalmology at the Salmaniya Medical Complex said the surgery, to remove the tumour in the bottom of the right eye of a 60-year-old Bahraini citizen, was the first of its kind performed in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The medical team, headed by Dr. Mohamed Naim Nasser, Head of the Ophthalmology and Retinal Surgery Consultant at the medical complex performed the procedure in less than 48 hours after the patient arrived at the SMC from another hospital.
The team immediately took the necessary steps to carry out the surgery, to save the patient’s eye, and to remove the tumour before it spreads or increases in size that may cause permanent damage to the eye.
The surgery took about two and a half hours, during which the tumour was completely removed.
Necessary samples were also collected in order to determine the type of tumour more precisely and to draw the appropriate treatment plan.
