Oslo: The Norwegian court is set to give its verdict on Monday in the high-profile rape trial of Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Mette-Marit and stepson of Haakon. The matter has sparked widespread media attention and raised a spotlight over Norway's royal family.
Høiby, 29, faces about 40 criminal charges, including four cases of rape, as well as allegations of violence, threats, and abuse against various women between 2018 and 2024. Prosecutors have asked for a seven years and seven months jail sentence if convicted of all key offences.
He has admitted to some minor offences, such as drug-related offences and driving infractions, but submitted a not guilty plea to the rape claims and several other major offences. Alleged victims testified during the trial, which took place over several weeks, and digital evidence was examined.
Despite the fact that Høiby has no formal role or royal title, the case sparked criticism of the Norwegian monarchy and harmed popular trust in it. One of the most major court cases involving a member of Norway's royal circle in recent times could arise from the verdict, which is expected later on today.
