Sharp variations in egg prices across local shops have triggered calls for stricter inspections of food stores in residential areas, amid growing complaints from residents over rising costs of essential goods.
Northern Municipal Council member Mohammed Saad Al Doseri, representing the Third Constituency, has urged the concerned authorities to step up monitoring, particularly in grocery outlets located within residential compounds.
He stressed that these shops are a primary source for families purchasing daily necessities, making regular inspections essential to ensure compliance with regulations and to protect consumers from unfair pricing practices.
Al Doseri pointed to significant discrepancies in egg prices, noting that some shops are selling them at BD2.700 or BD2.200, while others offer the same product for between BD1.500 and BD1.700.
He said this wide gap has raised concerns among consumers and highlighted the need for closer field oversight by regulatory authorities.
He further called for broader checks on similar price differences in eggs and other essential food items to ensure proper pricing standards and to prevent potential exploitation of consumers.
Al Doseri also emphasized the importance of price transparency, urging shops to clearly display prices on all goods available for sale.
In addition, he proposed establishing a 24-hour hotline to receive consumer complaints related to pricing, product quality, and commercial violations, arguing that such a system would enable faster responses and more effective action against offenders.
