“Hayaakom” Program Promotes Sustainable Waste Management

The Northern Municipal Council hosted an awareness lecture titled “Sustainability of Waste Management for Sustainable Cities”, as part of its “Hayaakom” program aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable community practices.
The session focused on strengthening understanding of sustainable waste management and its importance in supporting Bahrain’s broader environmental and development goals. It highlighted how effective waste practices contribute to environmental protection, social wellbeing, and economic efficiency.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Mahmoud Habib Al-Afiah, Head of Administrative Services and Coordination at the council, and moderated by Dr. Sayed Shubbar Al-Wedai, Chairman of the Northern Municipal Council.
In his remarks, Dr. Al-Wedai emphasized that waste management is a strategic priority within municipal work and an essential part of sustainable development planning. He underlined the importance of integrating environmental management with institutional coordination to reduce environmental impact and enhance resource efficiency.
The session brought together participants from various environmental and municipal fields, reflecting growing public interest and engagement in sustainability topics across the Kingdom.
Discussions covered five main themes, beginning with an overview of sustainable development principles and their economic, social, and environmental benefits at both individual and national levels.
The lecture also presented a proposed model for sustainable waste management based on modern environmental practices. It further highlighted the role of individuals and communities in supporting recycling initiatives, reducing waste generation, and adopting responsible consumption habits.
