Kyiv: At least nine people were killed and dozens injured in a new wave of Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, which also damaged a major historic cathedral in Kyiv and left large parts of the capital without electricity.

Ukrainian officials said four people were killed in strikes on Kyiv, while five rescue workers died in Kharkiv after coming under attack while responding to a fire caused by an earlier strike. More than 20 others were injured.

Among the sites damaged was the 11th-century Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, one of Ukraine's most important religious and cultural landmarks. Ukrainian authorities condemned the attack and said they would seek an international response over the damage to the historic site.

The attacks triggered fires in buildings and vehicles across Kyiv and cut power to more than 140,000 residents, according to city officials. Air raid alerts were issued across much of the country as Russia continued its bombardment.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported that a Ukrainian drone strike on the city of Tula, south of Moscow, killed three people and injured three others, including a 1 year old child.

The latest escalation comes ahead of this week's G7 summit in France, where the war in Ukraine is expected to be a key topic. It also follows recent discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump on efforts to end the conflict, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
