Man gets jail for road blockade

Manama

A Bahraini defendant, who blocked a Janabiya road with a metal chain, has been jailed for five years. The 20-year-old was reportedly among the 20 saboteurs, who demonstrated on November 22 last year at 7.55 am in Janabiya. They reportedly hanged a metal chain across the road to hinder road traffic.

They also scattered water tanks, tyres and stones before pouring oil and set it ablaze with firebombs. One suspect was arrested from the riot scene when police arrived to restore order.

According to court files, he led the police to a cache where around 12 firebombs were stashed in it. The officer, who arrested the defendant, told prosecutors that he had saw around 20 vandals. "They blocked the road with two water tanks and hanged a metal chain to stall the traffic," the officer said in his statement.

"When we arrived at the scene, they had instantly fled. But I could nab one of them (the defendant)," he added.

The defendant was accused on grounds of participating in an illegal protest, possessing firebombs and arson.
