‘Shift to energy efficient devices’

ManamaStarting 1 January 2017, only energy efficient appliances that meet the newly introduced Regulation for Low Voltage will be on sale in Bahrain, announced the Ministry of Industry, Commerce & Tourism in a statement.

In this regard, the Ministry has urged consumers to choose only devices that carry Gulf Conformity Mark to ensure safety.

This is as per the “Gulf Technical Regulation for Low Voltage Electrical Equipment & Appliances’ regulation” that came into force on July 1, 2016. The new law is effective for thirteen most commonly used products including hair dryers, oven, washing machines, water heaters, air conditions, refrigerators, juice mixers, microwave oven, fans and irons.

As per the Decree No. 71 of 2015, issued by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce & Tourism, the regulation has a standardised methodology in application at the GCC level.

Assistant Undersecretary of Domestic Trade Hamid Rahma confirmed that the ministry had provided a  transition period of six months to implement the programme, starting July 1, 2016.
