Bahrainis on trial for illegally crossing into Qatari sea

Manama : The six Bahraini men arrested by Qatar Coast Guard for violating its sea border will be tried, revealed sources yesterday.

Their first hearing has been scheduled for August 22.

According to sources, the Bahrainis, who had been engaged in offshore sport-fishing, were captured by Qatari officials last Saturday.

“They went for a fishing trip and suddenly they disappeared. Later we received a phone call from them, stating that they were arrested by Qatari officials for entering its sea limits without permission,” a relative of one of the arrested men said. “They were carrying two kilograms of fish.”

“All the six men are not fishermen by profession. They were only enjoying their time. They violated Qatari sea borders accidentally,” he said.

“They told us that they had heard gun shots before a sea patrol approached and arrested them. We are following the situation closely, but we are afraid of what will happen next, as they are facing a trial now,” the relative added.
