Stepmum, sons argue over man’s burial

A Lebanese stepmother entered a legal dispute in Bahrain with the sons of her deceased husband over the issue of where to bury him. The wife claimed that the deceased, also a Lebanese national converted from Druze to Muslim, had requested to be buried in a Muslim graveyard after his death. The man passed away on January 29.

But his sons wanted to take the body to his homeland in Lebanon to bury him there.

The case was heard yesterday at the Court of Urgent Matters, which ruled in favour of the wife. The court stated that delaying his burial due to transferring his body from a country to another would violate the sanctity of the dead and harm the public health. The lawsuit was filed by the elder son.

He also sued the Ministry of Health, whose officials were holding back the body of the deceased.

As per the wish of the deceased, the court ruled that he should be buried in a graveyard for Muslims in Bahrain.
