The Public Prosecution has taken action after a disturbing video showing a child abusing a cat circulated on social media, prompting widespread concern from the public.
According to a statement by the Head of the Family and Child Prosecution, the case came to light following a report from the Muharraq Governorate Police Directorate. The video, which clearly showed the child mistreating the animal, led prosecutors to summon and question the child involved.
In line with Bahrain’s Child Restorative Justice Law, the prosecution confronted the child with the footage and immediately tasked the Child Protection Centre at the Ministry of Social Development to assess his psychological and social condition.
The center's report revealed that the child exhibited signs of aggressive behavior and emotional issues, highlighting the need for behavioral guidance, proper upbringing, and consistent supervision. As a result, the case was referred to the Juvenile Judicial Committee.
The committee ruled that the child be placed under judicial supervision for three months. During this period, he is required to attend a rehabilitation and training program, as long as it does not interfere with his schooling. A specialist has also been assigned to monitor his progress and provide a report on his development.
Judicial supervision, as explained by the prosecution, is one of the legal measures introduced under the Child Restorative Justice Law, particularly after the recent amendment to Article 18. It allows for children to remain in their home environment under strict oversight, coordinated with relevant child protection authorities. The maximum duration of such supervision is three years. If the child fails to respond to the corrective measures, the case may be escalated for further action.
In her statement, the Head of the Family and Child Prosecution emphasized the crucial role of parents in instilling values and ensuring their children are guided away from harmful or criminal behavior. She stressed that parental supervision is essential not only for the child’s wellbeing but also to prevent legal consequences that may affect the family.
