House favours allocation of reclaimed land for housing

ManamaMajority of MPs in the House of Representatives yesterday voted for allocating parts of the newly reclaimed land to accommodate housing projects for citizens.

The MPs’ decision comes amidst rejection from the Government and Shura Council, the second council of the Legislative Authority in the Kingdom.

The matter initially appeared as a bill submitted by MP Mohammed Al Maarifi two years ago. The House of Representatives passed the MP’s bill, despite conservations of the government over constitutional violations in the articles of the bill.

As per the legislative process in Bahrain, the bill was referred to Shura Council for more study and discussion, and to be returned to the parliament with its recommendations.

Shura Council rejected the bill for similar reasons to the ones presented by the government, such as “consisting of constitutional violations and limiting investment opportunities in the Kingdom”.

The recommendations were handed over to the Public Utilities and Environment Committee in the House of Representatives, which also rejected the bill and issued a report on the matter.

The report was thoroughly discussed during yesterday’s session and the MPs insisted  to pass  the bill.

The lawmakers yesterday  expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people and their rejection of the controversial statements made by US President Donald Trump last week declaring Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

They organised a symbolic protest following their weekly session yesterday to convey the stance of the council towards the Palestinian cause.
