Kingdom Expands Agriculture and Food Security Efforts
Bahrain is continuing efforts to expand its agricultural sector, boost local production and strengthen food security, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak said.
Marking Arab Agriculture Day on September 27, the minister highlighted several initiatives supporting Bahraini farmers and increasing the availability of locally produced food.
Around 2.45 million trees have been planted across Bahrain, reaching 68% of the national target of 3.6 million trees by 2035.
The Bahrain Mangroves Initiative has also exceeded its planting target, with more than 2.23 million mangrove seedlings planted, representing 139% of the initiative’s target.
The ministry has allocated 18 agricultural plots covering more than 122,000 square metres to Bahraini farmers in Buri and Hoora Aali, with additional land planned for agricultural and livestock investment.
The latest Bahraini Farmers’ Market attracted more than 220,000 visitors over 12 weeks, while more than 250 tonnes of local agricultural produce were sold and marketed. Preparations are now under way for the market’s 14th edition.
Meanwhile, a community agricultural training programme has trained more than 2,000 participants in areas including greenhouse farming, organic agriculture, food processing and hydroponics.
