Global experts unite in Bahrain to tackle infection threats

Experts from more than 25 countries have gathered in Bahrain to address two growing challenges facing healthcare systems worldwide -- antimicrobial resistance and infectious diseases -- with pandemic preparedness and artificial intelligence also on the agenda.

Supreme Council of Health Chairman Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa opened the fourth International Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance and Infectious Diseases in Manama on Thursday.

Organised by the Infectious Diseases Association of the Bahrain Medical Society in cooperation with Education Plus, the conference brings together international experts and speakers alongside healthcare officials, doctors and medical specialists.

Dr Shaikh Mohammed stressed the importance of international cooperation and the exchange of scientific and medical expertise in tackling infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

He also highlighted the role of specialised conferences in keeping healthcare professionals up to date with the latest developments and supporting efforts to improve the quality of care. Conference President and President of the Infectious Diseases Association Professor Jameela Al Salman said the growing international participation reflected the conference's development over its first three editions and the increasing global focus on antimicrobial resistance and infectious diseases.

The scientific programme covers antimicrobial resistance, pandemic preparedness and the use of AI to promote the appropriate use of antibiotics, alongside advanced genomic sequencing technologies and the latest approaches to preventing and treating infectious diseases.

The opening ceremony also featured a video showcasing milestones from the conference's previous three editions, while supporters and sponsors were honoured for their contributions.
