Parliament has backed a request by MP Khalid Buanaq and others to halt a planned jump in the municipal fee added to electricity and water bills.
The rise, which would have taken the charge from BD2 to BD5, had been due to start today.
The proposal has been passed on to the government.
MPs said the increase would weigh heavily on households already struggling with higher living costs, especially those on lower and middle incomes.
Explanation
They argued there had been no clear explanation for the change, nor any new services offered in return.
“This increase is simply too much,’”said MP Buanaq. “It will hit low and middle-income citizens hardest, and comes at a time when families are struggling with the soaring cost of living. There’s no added service to account for the higher fee, and no clear explanation. It must be reviewed properly before being imposed.”
They are calling for a thorough rethink of the fee structure.
