UN Appeals For $50M To Aid Nepal Flood Victims

Kathmandu: The United Nations has appealed for $50 million to deliver emergency aid to more than 84,000 people in Nepal affected by catastrophic flooding. 

The urgent appeal comes as severe health risks mount and winter fast approaches across devastated mountain districts cut off from relief.

Triggered by an August 26 glacial mountain collapse along the China-Nepal border, the flooding killed over 1,300 people and left more than 5,600 missing across both countries.

The deluge tore through remote areas, destroying crucial infrastructure including roads, bridges, and hydropower dams.

The UN and humanitarian partners are seeking funding to provide cash, food, durable shelter, clean water, and healthcare to survivors who lost nearly everything. 

Health authorities are already monitoring outbreaks of fever and diarrhoea in displacement centers, exacerbated by human remains and thousands of dead livestock lying in flood debris.

With families urgently requiring durable shelter within weeks, early UN estimates place preliminary building damage in Nepal at $158 million alone.

Total economic losses are expected to be far higher, with local authorities suggesting overall reconstruction costs could ultimately reach billions of dollars.
