Six Dead After Blast Destroys Athens Building
Six people, including four American tourists, were killed after an explosion destroyed a residential building in Athens’ popular Plaka district near the Acropolis.
The blast occurred early Friday morning, bringing down the small three-storey building and damaging nearby properties and vehicles.
The four Americans were a family staying in an apartment on the first floor. They were reportedly preparing to travel to the airport for their return to the United States when the explosion occurred.
The other victims were an elderly British man and his Greek wife, who lived on the second floor of the building, according to Greek state broadcaster ERT.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said the explosion was likely caused by a gas leak, although authorities are investigating the circumstances.
The identities and ages of the American victims had not been released by Greek authorities.
