KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has slammed his security services following an ‘unacceptable’ daylight shootout in Kyiv between rival intelligence agencies, promising high-level dismissals.

The broad-daylight gunfight erupted between the military intelligence agency (GUR) and the State Security Service (SBU), leaving several officers injured as Ukraine continues to fight Russia's invasion.

Condemning the clash, Zelensky stated that both agencies acted in a way that was absolutely unacceptable and must be held accountable.

Two security officials, one from each agency, have been named as suspects in an ongoing investigation, and Zelensky announced that deputy agency heads bearing responsibility will be dismissed.

Ukrainian media reported that the confrontation was linked to the SBU detaining a deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, a battalion of anti-Kremlin Russians fighting for Kyiv under GUR command.

The SBU stated it was conducting counter-sabotage work to prevent a murder ordered by Russia, citing contacts between the commander and Russian special services. Meanwhile, the GUR alleged a targeted disinformation campaign against it.

Both agencies play central roles in Kyiv's war effort and have seen their powers grow massively during the invasion. Zelensky emphasised that establishing the truth is critical to ensure similar situations never happen again.
