Flood Disaster Declared Across Bangkok’s 50 Districts

Bangkok: Authorities declared a flood disaster on Saturday in all 50 districts of Thailand's capital, following nearly 48 hours of continuous torrential rain that caused widespread flooding. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reports that the city has received around 300 mm of rain since Thursday.

The downpour has buried key roadways, filled canals to capacity, and caused flooding in houses and businesses. Bangkok's eastern districts have been particularly hard hit, with inhabitants wading through deep water and having difficulty getting around.

The citywide disaster designation enables federal agencies and local governments to respond more promptly and comprehensively. Bangkok constructed temporary shelters, supplied sandbags, and intensified drainage and emergency operations. Residents living near canals have been asked to relocate vehicles and belongings to higher ground.

Chadchart Sittipunt said the city’s flooding situation has ‘stabilised’ and could begin improving if heavy rain eases. However, forecasters still expect heavy to very heavy rain through September 27.

Authorities have also recommended vulnerable individuals, especially bedridden patients who rely on critical medical equipment, to consider temporarily moving to safer facilities if necessary.
