Nepal Estimates Catastrophic Flood Losses At $2.56 Billion

KATHMANDU: Nepal is confronting an estimated $2.56 billion or 387.5 billion Nepalese rupees in total losses following last week’s catastrophic floods that devastated the country.
The severe flooding inflicted widespread destruction across multiple regions, causing extensive damage to private property, residential housing, and critical public infrastructure.
To address the most pressing needs, emergency disaster officials estimate that early recovery efforts over the initial four months will require approximately $52.6 million, equivalent to 7.95 billion Nepalese rupees.
This urgent financial allocation will focus directly on rebuilding essential roads, constructing temporary shelters for displaced residents, and restoring vital access to drinking water and electricity.
The figures were provided on Friday by Dharma Raj Upreti, chief of Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, outlining the massive scale of recovery required.
