2 Hydropower Workers Rescued Alive After 9 Days Trapped in Nepal Tunnel
Kathmandu: Two hydropower workers have been rescued alive from a mud-filled tunnel in Nepal, nine days after they were trapped by a devastating flash flood and landslide.
The workers were found inside the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower project in Rasuwa district, where rescuers had been searching for people missing since the disaster on August 26.
The two men, identified as Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan, were found about 170 metres inside the tunnel. Both were taken for medical treatment, with one suffering non-critical injuries.
The disaster, believed to have been triggered by a glacier collapse, caused widespread destruction in the Trishuli River valley. More than 1,200 people have died in Nepal and thousands remain missing.
Rescue teams are continuing operations at several hydropower projects, where hundreds of workers are feared to be trapped in tunnels. The successful rescue has raised hopes that more survivors could still be found.
