CALIFORNIA: Meta has officially announced the appointment of Indian entrepreneur Kunal Shah as the new head of WhatsApp. As part of the transition, Meta will also lead a $900 million funding round in Shah's consumer finance firm, CRED.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg praised Shah’s ‘builder mentality’ and global perspective, stating that these qualities make him well-suited to lead the world's largest messaging app.
Outgoing WhatsApp head Will Cathcart is stepping down, leaving the platform with a reach of more than three billion users. Shah, a serial entrepreneur and prominent angel investor, founded CRED in 2018 after a successful $400 million startup exit.
Shah’s appointment is expected to help WhatsApp explore new revenue streams beyond Meta's core advertising business by leveraging his background in finance, insurance, and lending.
With India serving as WhatsApp’s largest market boasting over half a billion users the startup ecosystem has celebrated the move as a significant milestone for Indian leadership in Silicon Valley.
