Romanian parliament rejects liberal PM-designate

Bucharest.: Romania's parliament rejected Liberal politician Adrian Vestea as prime minister-designate on Monday, marking a new political setback for the EU and NATO member. Vestea received only 189 votes, failing to secure the 233 needed to form a government.

This rejection follows months of instability, including the collapse of former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's government in May. President Nicusor Dan, who nominated Vestea on June 14, must now propose another candidate.

Vestea blamed the far-right AUR party for his defeat, noting that the country has been without a functioning government for 47 days, which he says is costing the nation precious time and European funds.

Analysts warn that if parliament rejects a second nominee, it will trigger the prospect of snap elections. Experts fear such an election would be "’a catastrophe’ for the economy and the country, as no major party besides the far-right AUR would likely benefit from the move.
