UK-EU Summit Delayed Following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Resignation

The planned UK-EU summit on post-Brexit ties has been delayed following British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation on Monday.

Nick Thomas-Symonds, the UK’s minister for European Union relations, expressed disappointment over the setback, though the European Commission clarified that the event is ‘postponed’ rather than cancelled. The summit was intended to repair Britain's fractured relationship with the neighboring bloc.

Despite the leadership transition, a UK government spokesperson emphasized a continued commitment to holding the meeting at the earliest opportunity.

Officials also reaffirmed their intent to secure trade and defense deals negotiated during Starmer’s tenure. Starmer had spent his two-year term pursuing closer ties with the single market, a delicate political task as the nation marks the 10th anniversary of the Brexit vote.

As the UK awaits a new leader, potentially veteran politician Andy Burnham, polls suggest the public increasingly views Brexit as a mistake, even without a clear mandate to rejoin.
