Washington DC: US President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to refuse aid to NATO countries, warning that he could withhold assistance if requested by alliance members.
Trump’s remarks were delivered during an Oval Office press conference, where he characterised the potential refusal as retribution for the perceived lack of support from member nations regarding recent US military operations in Iran.
Reflecting on the alliance, the President stated, ‘We spent all of this money. And then when we want to maybe have help on small stuff... They say no we would rather not help’.
He further indicated that the US might reciprocate this behavior, adding, ‘Stupid thing to say, because we can say that to them if we want, and we might’. Despite these rising tensions, Trump is currently set to travel to Ankara, Turkey, to attend the NATO summit scheduled for next month.
