Edinburgh: Peter Murrell, the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party and Nicola Sturgeon's ex-husband, was sentenced to five years and three months in prison after admitting to embezzling more than £400,000 from party financial accounts.
Murrell misused party funds over a 12 year’s period, spending it on luxury items, vehicles, and a camper. The judge described his acts as a ‘calculated crime of dishonesty’ and a major violation of trust, and stated that the sentence should serve as a warning to others in positions of responsibility.
The major lawsuit emerged from an extensive probe of the SNP's finances. Sturgeon, who resigned as Scotland's first minister in 2023 and was later cleared of all charges, has consistently denied any awareness of Murrell's activities. Authorities are currently working to retrieve the embezzled money.
