5 Dead as Europe Heatwave Intensifies, Two Children Found Dead in Car

Paris: At least five people have died as an extreme heatwave grips western Europe, with two young children found dead in a family car in southern France amid temperatures nearing record highs.

French authorities said the deaths of the children, aged four and two, are under investigation, but heat is the main suspected cause. The tragedy comes after three elderly people died from heat-related health complications near Bordeaux over the weekend.

France has placed nearly half the country under its highest heat alert, warning millions of residents to avoid outdoor activity and take precautions as temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C in many areas. More than 1,300 schools have closed and transport services have been disrupted.

The heatwave has also affected Spain, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Italy, with several countries issuing red alerts and forecasting temperatures well above seasonal averages. Some regions are expected to approach or break national June temperature records.

Scientists say climate change is making heatwaves more frequent, more intense and longer-lasting, increasing health risks across Europe.
