Jakarta: Indonesian authorities have detained 321 foreign nationals following a raid on an online gambling ring in Jakarta this past Thursday. The operation, which reportedly began two months ago, targeted victims outside of Indonesia.
Among those detained, Vietnamese nationals made up the largest group with 228 individuals, alongside citizens from China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia.
Currently, 275 people face charges related to gambling and money laundering. This crackdown comes as Indonesia faces a surge in illicit digital activities; official data shows that online gambling turnover reached approximately $16 billion last year, involving an estimated 12 million Indonesians.
In a separate action this week, immigration authorities also arrested 210 foreigners in Batam for an alleged investment scam, highlighting a broader regional effort to combat organized cybercrime.
