Nearly 1,000 children killed as measles outbreak worsens in Bangladesh

Dhaka : Nearly 1,000 children have died in Bangladesh’s worst measles outbreak in decades, with suspected and confirmed cases now exceeding 180,000, according to health ministry figures.

The outbreak has spread rapidly across the country, raising concerns over low vaccination coverage and shortages of vaccines.

More than 900 people have already died from measles, with children making up a large share of those affected. A mass vaccination campaign earlier this year reached more than one million children, but coverage remains below the level needed to prevent widespread outbreaks.

Bangladesh has also faced difficulties in securing enough vaccines amid political disruption and reduced international funding for immunisation programmes.

Health authorities are working to increase vaccination and contain the spread as the outbreak continues.
