Meloni government becomes longest-serving in postwar Italy

ROME: Giorgia Meloni marked a historic milestone as her administration officially became the longest-serving government in Italy's postwar history. 

Reaching 1,413 days in office, the prime minister surpassed the record previously held by media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi, bringing political stability to a nation that has experienced 68 governments over 80 years.

To celebrate the achievement, Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party is hosting a major rally Friday in the southern city of Bari, expected to draw up to 10,000 supporters.

Organized under the slogan ‘The Most Stable Government, the Strongest Italy,’ the event also serves as an early kickoff for the 2027 election campaign.

Meloni is scheduled to address the crowds in the evening, with speeches focusing on key achievements from nearly four years in power. The coalition is highlighting over one million new jobs created, a 21-billion-euro tax cut, and a reported 80 percent reduction in migrant arrivals.

However, the milestone faces pushback from trade unions and demonstrators gathering in Bari’s historic center. Opponents argue stability has failed to drive growth, pointing to stagnant wages, rising fuel costs, and declining public healthcare.
