Statues of Myanmar Independence Hero Aung San Vanish Amid Junta Crackdown

Yangon: Statues of Myanmar's independence hero General Aung San are disappearing from public spaces as the country's military rulers seek to erase symbols linked to the democratic movement led by his daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi.
Several monuments of Aung San have been removed or relocated in areas under military control, while others have been destroyed during fighting between junta forces and resistance groups. The changes come as Myanmar's civil war continues following the 2021 military coup.
Aung San, regarded as the founder of modern Myanmar, remains a widely respected national figure. However, his image has become politically sensitive because of his association with Suu Kyi, the jailed former civilian leader ousted by the military.
Analysts say the disappearance of the statues reflects the junta's efforts to reshape national symbols and weaken the legacy of the country's democratic movement, even as resistance against military rule continues across Myanmar.
