Iranian Airlines Face International Flight Disruptions
Several Iranian airlines have canceled international flights after the United States tightened sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector, disrupting connections with several countries.
Iranian media reported that the United Arab Emirates suspended flights operated by Iranian airlines in compliance with the new US sanctions. Flights involving Georgia and Azerbaijan were also suspended, while services to Baghdad, Muscat and Doha were affected.
Some connections with Turkey and China have continued, although a number of flights to both countries have also been canceled.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the measures were aimed at increasing economic pressure on Tehran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, meanwhile, said the sanctions would strengthen Iran’s resistance to US pressure.
The disruption follows a US warning that airports and aviation service providers could face secondary sanctions if they continue doing business with Iranian airlines.
Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei warned neighboring countries against cooperating with the US measures, saying such cooperation could lead to further restrictions on flights to Iran and reciprocal action from Tehran.
Earlier this month, the US Treasury announced sanctions against Iran’s remaining airlines as well as foreign companies and intermediaries accused of supporting their operations. The measures expanded restrictions previously imposed on Mahan Air to cover 27 Iranian airlines and removed authorisations that had allowed some aviation links with Iran.
Washington has accused Mahan Air of having links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
