Pyongyang : North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw tests of upgraded artillery and missile systems capable of striking parts of the Seoul metropolitan area, state media reported on Friday, in what analysts described as a show of military strength aimed at South Korea.
According to state news agency KCNA, the tests included an upgraded multiple rocket launcher system, a ballistic missile warhead and extended-range self-propelled artillery. North Korea said the new rocket launcher system has a range of 90 kilometres, enough to reach areas around Seoul from positions near the inter-Korean border.
Pyongyang said the weapons were designed to target key facilities, including airfields, ports and power infrastructure, and demonstrated improved range, accuracy and automation.
Kim said the tests reflected progress in strengthening both North Korea's defensive and offensive military capabilities, adding that the country would continue to build a powerful deterrent against its enemies.
The weapons tests came days after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung discussed North Korea with US President Donald Trump during the G7 summit in France. Trump reportedly urged greater attention to developments on the Korean Peninsula.
