Tokyo: More than 120 flights were cancelled in Japan on Friday as two tropical storms approached the country, bringing heavy rain, flood warnings and evacuation orders across several regions.

Severe tropical storm Mekkhala, which weakened from a typhoon, lashed southern and western Japan with strong winds and heavy rainfall. Authorities warned that it could interact with tropical storm Higos over the weekend, potentially complicating forecasts.

Evacuation advisories were issued for thousands of residents in parts of Kyoto due to the risk of flooding and landslides, while officials in Kyoto and Osaka warned of rising river levels. The severe weather also disrupted transport and industrial operations, with automakers suspending some production and the military postponing planned exercises.

The storms also affected Taiwan, where more than 1,600 people were evacuated and schools and offices were closed in several areas. Heavy rain triggered flooding and landslides, with authorities warning of further risks in mountainous regions. No casualties had been reported as of Friday.
