Thimphu: Nationwide outrage has been triggered by a number of viral videos that showed children being abused and harassed in Bhutanese schools, highlighting the increasing difficulties that come with the nation's rapid digital development. The clips, widely shared across social media platforms including Facebook, X, Reddit and Telegram, have prompted police investigations and inquiries by education officials.
The video allegedly shows two students violently assaulting three other students in a classroom at the school, with many more students watching. The incidents have reignited concerns over cyberbullying, online harassment, and the accessibility with which violent content spreads online.
Although Bhutan recently adopted digital connectivity, analysts claim that the nation is still creating the social, legal, and educational safeguards required to handle the dangers of an increasingly interconnected society.
Authorities have warned the public not to disseminate the recordings further, since doing so could exacerbate the victims' pain. The case has also prompted calls for stricter anti-bullying rules, increased digital literacy, and greater accountability for individuals who film and share such footage online.
